Hotboxing a spaceship

Saw "Arrival" last night, per my Christmas Eve tradition of seeing a film.

Admittedly went in a little drunk, so I couldn't stop giggling to myself about the smoky environment and thinking the aliens probably spent the entire trip to Earth smoking weed.

It's very good, and worth your while, and one of those good films that comes out every so often that's sci-fi, but also intelligent and mostly based in social commentary rather than focusing on the story. Also makes you think - good one to see with other people and talk about it afterwards. Amy Adams does a great job. Jeremy Renner kinda mails it in. It's very well-shot and directed. I think it might get some Oscar love, but probably not a lot. There's a lot of movies that look like they're gunning for Oscars ("Fences", "Silence", "Hidden Figures", "Lion") coming out this time of year, and it's tough to compete with all that with a movie about aliens.

Today has been nice and restful. Celtics blew a huge lead but pulled it out in the end. Isaiah Thomas is that dude.

Let Me Stand Next to your (turkey) fire

Well.. that was fun.

Two hours into cooking the turkey we hear a funny noise. I go into the kitchen and the bottom coil is totally ablaze shooting sparks all over the place. Turns out the oven coil was worn down and just blew up due to wear and tear. After shutting off the electricity and letting the fire burn out, and clearing the place out of smoke, we're left with a half-cooked turkey, and no oven. If you look closely to the left side, you'll see where it ultimately snapped in two, and of course the charred remains.

Looking like tonight will be much like the first part of "The Santa Clause" - "everyone likes Denny's, it's an American institution!"
